The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced yesterday that about one million Maclaren strollers, sold locally at Target and Babies R Us, are being recalled. It seems that nine different models, ranging in price from $100 to around $400 are being recalled, including the following: Volo, Triumph, Quest Sport, Quest Mod, Techno XT, TechnoXLR, Twin Triumph, Twin Techno and Easy Traveler.
The risk is real. So far, 12 children have lost their fingers after sticking them into the hinge area (where the stroller folds.)
"This is a very serious hazard," says a spokesperson for the CPSC. "We know child behavior, we know kids like to explore and sometimes put their fingers in places where they shouldn't be. But finger amputations that result from using a product that parents expect to be safe is unacceptable."
Maclaren is offering free repair kids, including hinge covers to protect the kids who currently have these strollers. If you have one of these strollers, call 877-688-2326 or visit Maclaren's recall page to get the repair kit.
Maclaren has also released a public service announcement explaining the recall. Check it out below.
