Kim Schuler is the mom of two boys, ages ten and twelve, and owner of Salon on the Go. She previously worked in a spa, but since she was a child, she’s dreamed of owning her own salon. One day, she decided to take a leap of faith and take action to make her dream come true.
“I wanted to have a passion for what I did. I no longer enjoyed being in a spa atmosphere. This has been a passion of mine since childhood,” Kim says. “Even having two beautiful children, the desire was still there. I enrolled in Beauty College in the evenings while my husband watched our little ones. It was the best decision I could have made.”
Kim says that since leaving the spa, she’s been working on building her own business and loving every minute of it. Work doesn't feel so much like work when one is following her dream.
Kim told me that owning her own business works out well for her family since she’s able to work around their schedules and make her own hours. Kim’s traveling salon does special occasions like birthday parties and weddings.
“There is nothing more rewarding than being a part of someone's special day. It is very uplifting,” she says. “I bring the luxury of the salon and spa to you at your chosen location. It is convenient for birthdays and bridal parties. They love it.”
Kim even goes to her clients’ homes for standard services like cuts, colors, perms, and makeup. She even works with a talented makeup artist who has developed her own cosmetics line.
“It has great coverage and last all day,” Kim says, of the makeup line. “She has a line for daily wear and one designed for photography.”
When asked what sort of advice she’d offer to other parents who are considering starting their own businesses, Kim says, “You just have to jump in and do it. It is better to try and fail than to always wonder ‘What if?’”
Kim says that overall, she’s loving her new career choice. Besides the flexibility and extra time with her family it offers, she says, “Most of my weekends are spent with birthdays and weddings. Who wouldn't enjoy that?”
