Parents are also partners, and keeping your marriage strong will help to keep your family strong. In that spirit, here are three more ways to strengthen the most important relationship in your ife.
1. Never go to bed without resolving any conflicts. This is an oldie but a goodie. If you cannot completely resolve the issue, at least decide (as a couple) to let go of the anger and agree to resolve it later. This can be more complicated than you’d think, but putting this plan into practice ensures good communication between partners.
2. Be grateful for each other—and talk about it. For example, I always make a point of noticing the little things my husband does for me or the kids and thanking him. This may seem overly simplified, but the bottom line here is that it’s so easy to overlook these small kindnesses, to take them for granted. Instead, be openly grateful for them, and tell your spouse why you’re thankful to have him or her. You’ll be surprised at the difference such a small act can make.
3. Don’t forget to say “I love you.” Many parents tell their kids they’re loved all day long, but forget to tell their spouse. While it’s safe to assume that your spouse probably knows you love him or her, it never hurts to say it. And, while you’re at it, feel free to sneak a little extra kiss or hug.
