There are many ornamental pets in the world but perhaps none can bring as much cheer to a room as a Canary.

Canaries are great birds for families who are looking for a long-time pet. Canaries have a typical lifespan of 15-25 years. They love vocal interaction with their human family members but prefer not to be handled.

Although females can be kept in pairs with little to no problem, typically a single male will sing more brilliant songs.

All Canaries need the following to stay healthy:

  • 1-2 teaspoons of a pellet or seed based Canary food every day
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables preferably every day but at the very least several times a week
  • Cuttle bones for beak health
  • Clean water
  • A cage large enough for your Canary to take flight
  • A variety of perches for healthy feet
  • A birdbath or warm mist from a spray bottle several times per week

As with any pet there are considerations with Canaries that you will want to evaluate with your lifestyle. Canaries are messy eaters. They will flip seed hulls outside of their cage. They are sensitive to drafts, temperature changes, odors, smoke, and fumes. It is likely that your Canary will sing beautiful songs, perhaps early in the morning. If you’re not an early bird, perhaps another ornamental pet is for you.
