Imagine you let your dog out for a last potty break before bedtime when you watch helplessly as he slips off into the shadows and beyond your sight.

Ok, so if you have a white Pomeranian this has probably never happened to you. But if you’ve ever owned a black, brindle, or dark brown dog you know this scene all too well.

Dark dogs and cats can be difficult to see at night but thankfully pet product manufacturers have created an array of collar lights and reflective material to make finding your pet easier.

There are several varieties. Check them out in your local pet store to see which is best for you.

  • Tag lights: Tag lights are a small light, typically red, that clips onto your cat or dog’s collar. These are great for people who don’t have their dog out after dark often. They are also great if you’re dog sitting for an elusive pup because they are easily transferred. They can be difficult to see if it is hanging in front of your dog and he is walking away from you.
  • Collar wraps: Collar wraps are a simple “sleeve” that slips over your dog’s collar attached with fabric adhesive [i.e. Velcro] or other hooking device. The collar wrap is larger than the light tag so it is more easily seen if your dog is walking away. These tend to come in multiple colors and often have reflective material as well as the light.
  • Light collars: Light collars are separate collars from your dog’s everyday collar. This is the most visible option as there are lights around the entire length of the collar. They are more bulky but provide the widest range of visibility.

Most of these light devices work on a small, watch-type battery that can be easily replaced. Be sure to read packaging for visibility distance with the light. That could make a difference if you’re out on a farm versus a smaller in-town size lot.
