Let your rabbit cage go "green"
Even your pet rabbit can go GREEN! Here are a few tips to “green” up your rabbit’s cage and help the environment.
-
Use recycled paper litter. Most pet stores carry a variety of recycled paper litter that is incredibly absorbent. Generally shredded paper litters that are then pressed into a pellet shape have the best absorbency. Be sure to choose a litter that is free of oils and dyes that may irritate your rabbit’s skin.
-
Feed your rabbit vegetable scraps from your kitchen. Don’t throw away any more carrot ends or celery leaves. Feed these to your rabbit! Be sure to check the safe food list and unsafe food list before feeding your rabbit any new fruits & veggies.
-
Use washable towels for clean up instead of paper towels, which clog up landfills once they biodegrade. Dedicate a diaper pail or garbage can with a lid to store the towels between washings so you don’t have to smell your rabbit’s unpleasant odors. Wash these towels separate from your clothes to avoid any unsightly stains.
-
Use toilet paper rolls and cardboard for toys. Although most pet stores carry some really snazzy toys for rabbits, they almost always come in plastic or cardboard wrappers. These wrappers and packages create unnecessary waste in our landfills. Simply cut up cardboard boxes or throw in a toilet paper roll for hours of fun for your rabbit.
-
Because rabbits are strictly vegetarians, their waste can be composted. Don’t throw the droppings in the garbage can; throw them on your garden! Be sure to use a paper litter appropriate for composting.
