Every time I walk into the Academy of Music in Philadelphia, I love it more and more. On Nov. 3, I attended opening night of Mamma Mia! – the hit musical based on the songs of ABBA. Performances run through November 8.
This was first time seeing this amazing show, and it was truly great. There was certainly something for everyone in this musical. The music was lively, the dialogue snappy, and the story was engaging. It was evident to the sell-out crowd that the performers on stage enjoyed performing this magnificent show.

For a pre-theater dinner, my daughter and I dined at Max Brenner located at 1500 Walnut Street in Philadelphia. I selected this chocolate-themed eatery based on a friend’s recommendation. I wanted to go somewhere close to Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts that appealed to both my tween daughter’s style and tastes, yet a place that offered great drinks, salads, sandwiches, and traditional dinner selections for me – Max Brenner fit the bill! We arrived about 5:30 p.m. and we immediately were led to a very comfortable table. The service was attentive and prompt, and everyone who visited our table sported a smile.
The left side of restaurant features a hip bar, with a menu of chocolate drinks as well as traditional favorites. The seating plan is open and comfortable. The crowd was mixed –families with children, groups of friends, and couples. We sat next to a nice couple – who like us – were grabbing a pre-show dinner and tried the restaurant based on hearing positive feedback from co-workers.
Both my daughter and I enjoyed our dinners. She had a basket of chicken tenders and waffle fries, and homemade BBQ sauce that was served with a nifty brush used to “paint” the sauce on her tenders. I opted for an Asian chicken salad that was the best I’ve had. We split an amazing chocolate chip banana bread dessert that was served with homemade chocolate sauce, whipped cream and berries.
After dinner, we sampled truffles. My daughter’s first request after we left the dreamy chocolate haven – “When can we come back?”
