
Today in 1940 the fantastic Lascaux cave paintings were discovered quite by accident. These exceptional cave paintings have captured the imagination of explorers ever since, making the World Heritage Site list in 1979.
While there may not be anything quite so spectacular in the USA, prehistoric rock paintings, or petroglyphs, abound. One of the most impressive lies a few miles east of Fallon, Nevada in the form of Grimes Point. The site has a Nevada state historical marker as well as being listed on the National Register.
A half-mile trail bristles with interpetive signs. Basalt rocks are covered in symbols, some recognisable as animals and people, others purely abstract. This area was once on the shores of Lake Lahontan, an ancient and vast lake that once spread into eastern California. On a hot Nevada day, you really wouldn't know it.
