Over the weekend, there were several historical marker dedications.
In Horseheads, New York, a historical marker for the 19th-century Chemung Canal was unveiled. The Chemung Canal was an important way of transporting goods and the marker is placed where the Chemung River flows into it. Parts of the original canal are still visible at the marker location.
In Murphy, Texas, a new historical marker was dedicated to celebrate the Murphy Cemetery's status as a Historic Texas Cemetery. This is a special kind of landmark designation special to Texas and the cemetery received its status in 2001. The ceremony was followed by a flower bulb planting for the History Blooms celebration.
Also in Texas, the 1897 Schnabel Building received a Texas historical marker. The marker is at the corner of Belknap and Washington and was once a drug store. The marker is an informational sign; it does not confer Texas landmark status on the property but rather, tells its story.
Goodsprings, Nevada received a historical marker to celebrate the history of a tiny town. The hamlet of Goodsprings has around 200 inhabitants and the marker is at a park near the community center. Located in Clark County, Goodsprings is near the California state line.
