Filming commences this weekend on HBO's fantasy series "Game of Thrones" at Doune Castle near Stirling. Based on author George R. R. Martin's epic "A Song of Fire and Ice" series, the castle is doubling as Winterfell, the ancient seat of House Stark.
The pilot episode will be directed by Tom McCarthy ("The Station Agent") and the cast includes Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Ehle and Lena Headey. Additional filming is scheduled to take place in Northern Ireland and Morocco. If the pilot is successful, HBO plan to greenlight a full series based on the first novel.
Doune Castle was constructed in the 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and is noteworthy for being constructed during a single period and surviving relatively unchanged and complete. The castle is famous for its 100ft high gatehouse and impressive Great Hall - one of the best preserved in Scotland.
Doune Castle has featured on film before. In "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" it stood in for multiple locations, including Camelot and Castle Anthrax and the castle remains a place of pilgrimage for Python fans, with thousands visiting Doune each year to take part in annual re-enactments.
