The twin red pandas which were born in July this year at the Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park near Kirkcubright in southwest Scotland have finally been named.

The female has been called Cai, which means colorful, and her twin brother named Liang, meaning bright/shining. The adorable new arrivals have proved a big attraction for the wildlife park. They've captured the imagination of the nation and been the subject of worldwide media attention since their birth.

Red pandas are endemic to the Himalayas and are among the world's most threatened species with only a few thousand are left in the wild. Successful captive breeding is uncommon which makes the twin's birth all the more special.

The Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park is a great destination for visitors to this south-west corner of Scotland, especially families. You won't find large zoo animals here - no elephants or big cats - but the park is home to a varied collection of nearly 150 smaller species, housed in natural and sympathetic enclosures within a stunning woodland setting. In fact some animals even roam freely around the park, like the friendly and inquisitive lemurs.

You'll get the chance to see native Scottish wildlife that few of us are lucky enough to glimpse in the wild, such as Scottish wildcats, red squirrels and pine martens. But as its name suggests, the primary focus of the park is conservation; it serves as a breeding center for endangered animals from around the world and a third of the species here are threatened in the wild. The red panda twins are their latest success story.

The park is one mile outside the fascinating and beautiful town of Kirkcudbright (pronounced kir-coo-bree) and signposted from the A75. For more information on visiting Cai and Liang and the other residents of the Galloway Wildlife Conservation Park please click here.
