Okay, so the life of a SAHD (stay-at-home-dad) can get lonely sometimes. Let's face it, we dads aren't always as gregarious as our better halves, and things like play-dates can feel a little weird when you're the only guy in the group.

I stay connected with a lot of friends via social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn, but most of these guys aren't staying or working at home, as I do, and don't have much to say during the 9-5 slot where I need a friendly voice that can speak in full sentences.

Personally, I like Twitter for this very reason. There are a lot of dads out there who don't have the time (or interest) to sit down and post to a blog, or even other networks during the day, but can slam out 140 characters between changing diapers and scrubbing crayon off the coffee table.

If you haven't ventured into the world of Twitter, here's a great two-and-a-half minute video that gives you Twitter in a nutshell.

Okay, if you've watched the video (I love the mag-board, lol) and you're still with me, here's a very good article on How to Get Started with Twitter.

There are hundreds of dads out there on twitter and it's a great place to get some advice, post a link, or just relax in the knowledge that some men can like football and still know how to French-braid their daughter's hair. With usernames like Geekdad, Daddys toolbox, Dad gone mad, and Buckdaddy, you're sure to find some guys with similar interests and maybe even make some new friends.

Here's a link to 25 top Twitter Dads.

A tip - before you click the "follow" button on someone, go to their Twitter page and read a few of their posts. This will give you a pretty good idea of what kind of "tweets" (posts to Twitter) you can expect from them. If you like what you see, then follow them.

Also, regardless of what anyone says, there is no unwritten rule that you must follow everyone who follows you. Some folks are into the numbers, I'm not. I'd rather follow 5 people who are posting stuff I'm interested in, that have to sort through 500 tweets that I couldn't care less about.

BTW, it’s not just about being a SAHD. I follow friends from high school, fellow writers, a couple of my favorite actors, and some big name publishers as well.

Oh, and you can follow me on twitter by the username: PerksBooks

Happy tweeting!

-Perry
