There will be a few unhappy folks – some with the last name, Kennedy – rustling around Cape Cod this Memorial Day weekend.
Turns out, the Cape Wind project won approval on Thursday, for a composite certificate needed for the proposed billion-dollar wind farm. This composite certificate combines nine state and local permits needed for the project to proceed. The permit also overturns an older Cape Cod Commission procedural denial of the project.
The Cape Wind offshore windfarm has been opposed by folks who have homes on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket who claim the turbines would kill migrating birds. Though it's probably safe to say that the real issue is those million-dollar views.
Regardless, the project is now waiting for final approval by Interior Secretary, Ken Salazar. And we believe it looks good for the wind farm developers, Cape Wind Associates, LLC. After all, just last month, the Interior Department released new guidelines for leasing offshore areas for the production of wind energy. Salazar has also been very vocal about wind development, stating that he is ready to move forward with offshore development in the Atlantic Ocean.
If this thing does finally see the light of day, 130 wind turbines will end up powering about 400,000 homes.
