Benevolent stories like this are happening all over the country but may be deemed unworthy to print.

In small town USA, workers and attendees of a drug and alcohol recovery center have been feeding a stray kitten and noticed a wound on its neck.

Thinking it may have been shot with a BB gun, they call a local animal rescue group for help.

The eyes of Stephen, one of the center's workers, are sincere but there is undeniable reluctance as he hands the kitten over to the rescuer. "He was a stray kitten and I tamed it.  Is he going to be OK?"

Now all eyes are on the rescuer.

As she looks at them, she can't help wondering what each of these young boys had been through to end up at a recovery center.

Doesn't matter. What matters now to them is the life of one little kitten.

She assures the group that the kitten will be just fine.

Relief. The kitten has not been shot but instead it's a wolf worm (Nasty critters. But, that' s for another story); easily removed at the vet's and disinfected.

The rescuer returns to the recovery center, where the boys immediately stop playing basketball and call for Stephen to come out as they gather around the car.

She explains the need for the antibiotics twice a day.

As she places the kitten back in Stephen's arms, she notices its body relaxes and it licks his face.

Yes, she could have just driven the kitten back to her house and fostered it along with all the others looking for a family.

But, these boys had the foresight to call for help. They truly cared about a little living creature. They did not turn their backs, just as the recovery center is not turning its back on them.

Additional info:

Stephen is a worker who lives at the facility.

Arrangements were made to return for the kitten in a few weeks for its shots and to be neutered.

A crate was brought to the center, along with cat food; donated to the boys caring for the kitten.
