The Toledo Walleye announced three roster moves today, including the addition of two players from their American Hockey League affiliates. Sebastien Piche, a defenseman from the Grand Rapids Griffins, and Derek Nesbitt, a right winger from the Rockford IceHogs, were added to the team. Left wing Jonathan Trottier, who has been on injured reserve since the pre-season, was released to make room.
Sebastien Piche began his career in the QMJHL, playing for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Lewiston MAINEiacs, Shawinigan Cataractes, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Rimouski Oceanic. He was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings back in March and assigned to Grand Rapids.
Red Wings scout Mark Leach was optimistic on Piche's future in the game, stating, "He's an offensive defenseman. He moves the puck very well, very good on the power play, good shot, creative, good hockey sense, good stick skills."
Derek Nesbitt played four seasons at Ferris State University, including an impressive sophomore season in which he tallied 53 points. After college he spent three seasons in the ECHL between the Gwinnett Gladiators and the Idaho Steelheads, winning the Kelly Cup with Idaho in 2007. He called up to the AHL, playing for the San Antonio Rampage, Manitoba Moose and Rockford IceHogs.
Both players will be on hand this weekend as the Walleye host the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday and Sunday. Friday is also Buckeye-Wolverine Rivalry Night and the Teddy Bear Toss, which will benefit Lucas County Children Services. Sunday is Kids Night with a post-game skate with the team.
Also this weekend, two Walleye players will be on hand at the Lucas County Arena to sign autographs. Team captain Ryan Stokes and Malcolm MacMillan will be at the Swamp Shop from 1-2 p.m. to sign Walleye gear, which is available for purchase as well.
