Vesuvio is a perfect, perfect, perfect place for going out with friends for a few drinks. It is also ideal in the fact that it has a friendly staff; they are welcoming and accommodating. You want music even though the jukebox is busted? Let them just round the channels on TV to find you something to listen to. Classic rock? Great guess, that will do just fine. Don’t want to sit at the bar? The lounge area is absolutely inviting.
The drinks are always $4 and the selection is wide. The food is above par. It is not your standard pub fare, unique and creative.
But – what Vesuvio boasts about their cheesesteak BLT appears to be a rave review from a time that has passed. Back in 2007 this sandwich, made up of Filet Mignon, carmalized onions, bacon, provolone, lettuce, tomato and sriracha mayo was named “the best sandwich in America” by the Today Show. While there is little doubt that this sandwich has the ability to be stellar, the latest sampling have faltered a bit. The meat was a bit chewy and the onions were overpowering. The plentiful curly fries were, however, perfectly fried.
Again, let it be stated, that Vesuvio is not a place to be avoided. Get a few friends together and go hang out, it is worth it.
Question for the readers: Where – in or around Philadelphia – do you find YOUR favorite sandwich? Please leave comments, it would be a joy to try out some suggestions.
