The Asus Eee 1000HE has all the accessories you need, and little extra

The Asus Eee 1000HE arrives securely packed in a compact box. The parts include:

  • The netbook itself
  • Six-cell Lithium-Ion battery
  • A cleaning cloth
  • A thin protective sleeve
  • Power adapter and cord.
  • Documentation and utility DVD

The Asus 1000HE comes with 1GB of memory, which is adequate to run the XP-Home operating system installed on the system. However, for about $25 you can upgrade this to 2GB, and this is the single best way to improve performance of a machine whose performance is already limited compared to a typical standard desktop or laptop.

The upgrade is relatively easy. You must remove two screws on the hard drive/memory bay cover. Lift up on the panel – there are two latches on the side that are holding it in place and it’s not clear in the documentation whether you need to pull up on the panel or slide it off (just pull up gently). The memory card lifts out and can be easily replaced.

The power adapter is compact compared to the typical laptop brick – a nice feature in a machine designed for portability.

The cleaning cloth is a great feature for a very glossy machine that attracts fingerprints easily.

The protective sleeve looks nice, but it is thin and shouldn’t be counted on for any real protection. Consider one of the Zeroshock notebook cases from Shinza if you actually want your machine to survive any real travel.

Tomorrow - Configuration and operation
Previous - surprising power in a small package
