What do you look for when shopping for a laptop? Value? Portability? Features? Reliability? A wide selection of business laptops are available now for well under $1000, so there are plenty of options to choose from.

But there are two groups who look for something else in a laptop. Serious gamers and software developers look for raw power. Gamers need it to play the latest games at full speed in high resolution mode. Software developers need it to be able to run multiple virtual machines at once. For these groups, the new Alienware M15x Laptop is a serious contender.

With the latest Intel i7 processor (that’s 4 hyperthreaded cores = 8 threads), up to 8GB of DDR3 memory and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphic card, gamers and developers alike will have plenty of power at their disposal. Toss in a 500GB 7200 RPM drive, 802.11b-n wireless and a multi-format DVD drive with Microsoft’s latest Windows 7 OS and you’ll be ready for anything.

Of course you don’t get this power without some compromises. Don’t expect the battery to last long outside of power-saving mode. And at 9 pounds, it’s more luggable than portable.

Alienware (now owned by Dell) has a long and solid reputation for high-end gaming computers. They are worth looking at, even if you might not be able to afford them at the moment.
