Keyboards and mice get dirty. In fact, a 2004 study found that keyboards, with 3295 microbes/sq inch and mice with 1676 microbes per/sq inch, are considerably filthier than the average toilet seat that has only 49 microbes/sq inch.
How can this be? Unlike a toilet seat, it’s virtually impossible to clean and sanitize a mouse or keyboard. At least, it was.
Seal Shield offers a series of washable keyboards including a flexible keyboard you can actually throw into a dishwasher, as well as one with full travel keys. They also have a dishwasher safe mouse.
Keep in mind, we’re not talking just spill resistant here. We’re talking the ability to take a real scrubing and sanitizing in a dishwasher.
It’s no surprise that much of Seal Shield’s marketing is towards the medical market – the last thing you want is for all those computers in hospitals that manage customer care and medication to be a source of infection. What is surprising is that the pricing on these devices is comparable to that of regular mice and keyboards.
Schools, offices and homes where the entire family shares computers could all gain health benefits from adopting these gadgets. There’s certainly no doubt they deserve their spot at day 18 of the CES 30 days of innovation.
