Eye-Fi memory card
The memory card with built-in Wifi

Downloading photos from your camera is a hassle. It’s not a huge hassle mind you – a USB cable and included software makes it quite painless. But it’s still something you have to remember to do periodically.

Unless, that is, you have an Eye-fi memory card. Get within range of your home network or (depending on the version of card you have), any Wayport hotspot, and your pictures will download themselves to your computer or photo site – based on the card and configuration.

It’s a cool idea – and an enormous convenience. Is it worth a stiff premium in cost though – almost $50 more than an equivalent capacity card? If you travel a great deal and want the ability to secure your photos without toting your laptop, this could be a winner. But for short trips, and general home use, investing in some high capacity memory cards might be a better choice.
