Five steps to breaking out of the corporate world
Trying to leave the corporate world can be really hard. You end up feeling handcuffed to a company, even if it’s a great one, because of the salary, stock, benefits and bonuses. However, there are those of us who know that the corporate life is not for us. And so we dream of an escape. For some it remains only a dream, and for a few lucky ones, we manage to break free.
If you know that leaving the corporate world for the life of an entrepreneur is for you, and you just don’t know where to start, begin with these five basic steps.
Five steps to breaking free:
- Dig deep for what matters to you most. When you think back to things that you love to do, ask yourself, “What did doing ‘X’ get for me that was important/meaningful?” By asking this question, you will start seeing patterns of things that might surprise you. This will help you make sure that the business you start is aligned with the things that matter to you most. And as many say, “If you are doing what you love, it doesn’t feel like work.”
- Create a strong support system. This support system needs to include people that say, “Yes you can” instead of those that say “No you can’t”. When you surround yourself with people that think it is possible or that you are capable, it will stretch you to make it happen. Also, it is much easier to problem solve from a place of possibility versus doubt.
- Change your biggest limiting thoughts. You may need help here, but the first thing is to begin identifying these thoughts and then asking yourself, is that really true? By taking a good hard look at those limiting thoughts, you begin to find that they are really just a smoke and mirror to keep you in the same place. These thoughts are only as true as you make them. Sure it may take a little work for them to not have such a strong hold or be as emotionally charged, but you can overcome those thoughts that are holding you back just by questioning their validity.
- Set an awesome vision for what is possible in your life. We all know that when you have a clear vision or goal, it is much easier to attain. Don’t believe me? Ask Tiger Woods. I’m not trying to be flip, it is well documented that when you write a clear goal or vision, it is 85% more likely to happen. The clearer and richer the goal or vision, the more compelling it is to attain. So why not use a strategy that works to get you what you want.
- Research, research, research! Once you know what you want to do, make sure to do your homework on every aspect of setting up and running the business. Setting up a service based business will be different than a product based one. Income and expenses will come and go to different areas depending on the type of business you have, and upfront costs will vary. The more you know the better equipped you will be to create a realistic action plan.
I guarantee if you spend time on these five basic steps, you will be light years ahead of others. Also, by spending some time planning up front, you will make sure that the business you start is right for you and the life you want.
