President Hosni Mubarak's Views on Egypt's Vision of Establishing Peace

In an important interview to "Al-Ahram" newspaper President Hosni Mubarak said on 16/8/2009 that his current visit to Washington aims at explaining Egypt's vision of establishing peace and taking part in drawing up the U.S plan to achieve this goal as Egypt has its experience in tackling the issue of peace and maintains relations and contacts with the Palestinian and Israeli sides.

The President said that Egypt will not be a party to any U.S. nuclear umbrella to safeguard Gulf states as this means accepting the deployment of foreign troops and experts on our land, a move which we can not never accept.

The President said the Middle East is not in need of any unclear power whether in Iraq or Israel but rather in need of peace, security, stability and development. The President said generally speaking we did not get official contacts on this suggestion.

As for the U.S aid, the President said this issue is not tabled on the summit agenda as it is tackled at the experts and ministerial level. The President said if Egypt highly appreciates the assistance it gets from the U.S., it rejects any conditions on this assistance.

The President said our relations with former U.S administration under President George Bush were normal and witnessed fundamental disagreements on the situation in Iraq and the peace process. He said disagreements were not related to domestic situation.

The President said the issues of democracy, reform, and human rights are an Egyptian domestic affair in which we reject any pressures of foreign interference by the United States or any other country. He said Egypt's relations with consecutive U.S. administrations were strategic adding joint interests withstand disagreements in view points.

The President said dissolving the People's Assembly are baseless rumours as Egypt is a state of institutional. He said dissolving the parliament is organized by the constitution. The President said he dissolved the parliament one time only since he has taken over adding there are no justifications for dissolving parliament.

The President said he is following performance of the government and the economic reform policies it has been carrying out during the past years. He said economic reform has enabled Egypt of providing 3 million job opportunities during the past four years.

The President said he has given directives to the government to provide the needs of the Egyptian families from essential commodities and Ramadan family needs.

The President said he informed the Israeli leaders that their stances must be coupled with deeds, stressing the importance of resuming negotiations between the Palestinian authority and the Israelis.

The President said he had informed the U.S. President in Cairo that Arab countries approach in dealing with Israel following Madrid conference is not encouraging to take any steps for normalizing relations without making a tangible headway in the peace process and withdrawal from the occupied Arab countries.
