The vote last night was a little closer than expected with only 1 republican voting for the bill. Before the bill was voted on however, a deal was cut on abortion in favor of the Christian democrats who couldn’t vote for the bill otherwise insuring the passing of the health care bill by 5 votes. It was a small price to pay for an even bigger monster.
Republicans did their best pointing out everything that was wrong with such a bill along with the fact that it is unconstitutional but in the end the yeas had it. Many democrats voted against the bill. Some say because the 2010 elections are so close but that could have been the case with republicans too. You can never be sure which politician is constitutionally literate.
We did however hear a confession from South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn. When interviewed by former Federal Judge Andrew Napolitano Clyburn said “"There's nothing in the Constitution that says that the Federal government has anything to do with most of the stuff we do." Then he asked the judge "How about you show me where in the Constitution it prohibits the Federal government from doing this?" Being that the Congressman is the third ranking democrat in the house and doesn’t understand that the Feds are only given certain enumerated powers pretty much sums it up for the rest of the crew.
So where does it go from here? The word is that the Senate has already started preparing. It will be like Halloween in the Senate with the lobbyists filling their pockets with goodies. All the American people can do is watch and hope for the best. As stated in the previous article, many unemployed Americans have found out the hard way that all the years of taxes they paid have amounted to nothing. They do not qualify for Medicaid and cannot afford cobra. There is good news for them however, with the new health care bill passed by the house the government will just take the money directly out of their unemployment checks for them. What a deal. Americans will no longer be able to choose between food and health care. The same provision is currently in the Senate version of the bill as well.
What’s more is that if somehow citizens are able to skate around the tax they will be incarcerated and or fined up to $250,000 and 5 years in prison. According to the Congressional Budget Office, the government option may be more expensive than a private plan. Wasn’t that the whole reason for the bill, more affordable health care? Those who cannot afford that will be given subsidies but there is a catch to that also. Government goes by your gross wages. They do not care what bills you have or the fact that you may pay child support.
As Nancy Pelosi congratulated the same crowd that passed all of President Bush’s unpopular bills all one could think about were the words of Thomas Jefferson, “I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.” The Senate may not take this up until January.
