In his six decades as a blues guitarist, singer, songwriter and harmonica player, Eddie Kirkland recorded albums with John Lee Hooker, toured as Otis Redding's guitarist and shared bills with Muddy Waters and B.B. King. His own recording career is scattered over various labels, with some falling out of print, but is most definitely worth searching out.
Now in his 80's, (as a youngster, he saw Robert Johnson perform live, one of the few people still around who can say that) he might not be capable of some of his wild stage antics of the past, such as playing guitar while standing on his head on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, but the video evidence shows that he's still plenty spry, (jumping off the stage at around the 5:20 mark!) and still delivers the real raw blues live.
It's pretty amazing that a guy like this, a living piece of music history, is playing for free at two little local clubs twice this week. If you like blues guitar, these shows are not to be missed.
