Are you, like me, an animal lover? If so, there is a great resource for animal-loving travelers, with animal friendly travel ideas for traveling with your own furry friend, as well as ways to prevent animal cruelty around the world and what to do when you encounter it.

The site is called Compassionate Travel, and this is what their home page says:

"Whether you are just getting started on planning your next trip or have just returned from vacation, Compassionate Travel provides all the information that a traveler needs to make their trip animal-friendly.

You will find information on what you can do at every stage of your trip including what to avoid, what to do should you encounter cruelty while traveling, and animal-friendly travel ideas."

By participating in animal-friendly activities while on vacation, compassionate travelers can enjoy witnessing animals behaving in the way that nature intended without causing harm to them. Some activities compassionate travelers can engage in include:

  1. Exploring volunteer vacation opportunities where travelers can help animals while abroad
  2. Visiting nature reserves and national parks
  3. Taking a responsible wildlife watching tour
  4. Getting close to your favorite animals by using binoculars or cameras and camcorders with telephoto (zoom) lenses
  5. Donating to local animal shelters, sanctuaries and wildlife rehabilitation centers
  6. Reporting animal mistreatment and cruelty
  7. Supporting the local animal shelter or humane society by contacting them ahead of time to ask if they need supplies like old blankets, towels, toys etc. See a list of animal organizations in your destination >>
  8. Taking a responsible equine or camel ride

There are also Travel Don'ts, such as a list of souvenirs to steer clear of, and foods to avoid. The resource is part of the World Society for the Protection of Animals. They have a great series of brochures that you can download in pdf format, or order from the WSPA website.
