Novelist E.M. Forster once said, “Railway termini are our gates to the glorious and the unknown. Through them we pass out into adventure and sunshine.” Well, if you ever decide to take the train heading southbound towards Downtown San Diego, you'll quickly be able to understand what he's talking about. Not only will you discover adventure and sunshine on this Amtrak Pacific Surfliner, but you'll also come across striking views of the seashore.
Going back in time as a kid, annual road trips were torturous. I vividly recall driving my family to the brink of insanity on many occasions, asking the infamous “Are we there yet?“ question every five seconds. Now as an adult, I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that whether I’m traveling by car, boat, plane, train--you name it--I’m still as high-maintenance and impatient as they come. Don’t get me wrong--I have a great passion for exploring new places. I just despise the actual time it takes for me to reach a destination.
So, if you’re anything like me and you’re planning a trip to Downtown San Diego, here’s a piece of advice: Choose to ride the train. Unlike driving, this mode of transportation is a little less painful, limiting the muss and fuss of dealing with street lights, traffic, finding parking, getting gas, and the list goes on. Plus, it makes travel time part of the vacation fun.
Remember, this isn’t just your average boring train ride. Before you arrive into downtown, you’ll suddenly find yourself closer to the southern coast than you could have ever imagined. A quick stop in San Clemente drops you off right onto the pier, reminding you of just how close in proximity the train tracks approach the shoreline. As you stare off into the endless ocean, you'll realize that the beautiful scenery of the sea is exactly what most Americans picture California to look like. This unique route can easily make you feel a sense of peace and calm rush through your entire body.
There's no doubt that the train ride will certainly give you the option to relax, kick up your feet and eat, sit up and stretch, or simply just avoid the stress and hassle of driving altogether--which sounds particularly great for most of us Angelinos who've unfortunately become accustomed to living in a place where a mere 20 mile commute can take upwards of 2 hours during rush hour traffic. Believe me, it’ll feel refreshing to let go of the reigns for once and try something out of the ordinary. With reasonable Amtrack ticket rates, it definitely beats being buried amidst the traffic-ridden chaos of the city.
