Ask most people if they would willingly jump at the chance to fall out of an airplane 13,000 feet above solid ground, and they would probably say that you’d have to be downright insane to even consider the thought. Friends and family members would most likely attempt to convince you to come to your senses and try something else that’s safer, like skiing or fishing. Nevertheless, around 350,000 people still opt to take the parachute plunge every year.
The extreme aerial sport has become so popular over the past couple of decades that the number of jumps made each year has risen to nearly three million. People of all backgrounds and walks of life are now skydiving. As long as you’re at least 18 years of age and ideally weigh less than 200 pounds, the dive facilities welcome you with open arms. Rachel Ray, Prince Henry, and even former president George H.W. Bush are just a few of the many famous faces that have graced the open air.
Whether you’re trying to conquer your fears or you’re just addicted to the adrenaline rush, skydiving is the ultimate, one in a lifetime thrill that is incomparable to any other adventure you’ll experience in your lifetime. Sure, there are some risks to be aware of, but they are rare. According to the United States Parachute Association, every year there are about 1.4 deaths per 100,000 jumps. In comparison, you have close to a 1 in 6,000 chance of dying in a car accident. So, you’re actually better off plummeting through the sky at speeds of 120 miles per hour than driving to work everyday. What’s even more comforting is the fact that skydiving death and accident rates are actually dropping every year most likely due to the strict safety measures and precautions being taken by certified experts.
Still, anyone who is interested in skydiving should definitely do their homework. Make sure the facility is reputable, USPA certified, and most importantly, be sure you feel comfortable with your decision. There is no better time to break out of your shell, challenge yourself, and fly high!
