As we enter the Hebrew month of Kislev, a season of giving that includes the holiday of Chanukah, the Jewish sorority on the University of Central Florida’s campus joined with the Chabad at UCF for a unique take on giving charity.
Alpha Epsilon Phi, or AEPhi for short, was founded by 7 Jewish women at Barnard College in 1909 and brought a chapter to UCF in 2006. The sorority remains primarily Jewish, and exists with the mission to “inspire and support exemplary women dedicated to friendship and a lifelong commitment to Alpha Epsilon Phi while building on the vision of our Jewish founders.” AEPhi prides itself on many things, not the least of which is their dedication to sisterhood and philanthropy, and that was exemplified by the 30+ UCF AEPhi Sisters that showed up at the UCF Chabad House this past Thursday to participate in an event called “Loaves of Love.” The girls, joined by several other members of the Chabad Jewish Student Group, braided and baked two loaves of challah bread each. One loaf they kept for themselves, and the other was set aside as “tzedakah” or charity. The event provided an opportunity for the girls to join together for an evening that was not only fun, but gave the students a chance to give back to the community around them. “Being in a room with about 30 Jewish women making challahs for seniors at Kinneret not only felt rewarding, but had a feeling of love and togetherness,” said Deena Willis, one of the AEPhi UCF Vice-Presidents. “Though we all have busy lives, we all came together to learn how to make challah and the meaning of it. This event was a chance to learn more about Jewish history while making others happy!”
At the end of the event, over 40 loaves of challah bread were packed up in gift bags and packaged with love, kindness, a UCF Chabad newsletter, and a card wishing “Shabbat Shalom”. The loaves of challah were brought to the Kinneret Senior Living Center in Downtown Orlando by Chabad at UCF co-director Rivkie Lipskier and a few members of the Chabad Jewish Student Group. Jill Weintraub, an active member of the group, was among those who dropped off the challah to the Kinneret Apartments. “I loved getting to see the looks on everyone's faces as they received the challahs. The room was filled with smiles as everyone opened the goodie bags” said Jill. “Being able to spread the joys of Shabbos throughout the Orlando Jewish community by helping out in events such as Loaves of Love has truly been meaningful to me and I look forward to helping out at many more events with Kinneret, G-d willing, in the future!”
