The winner for best picture at the 72nd Academy Awards in 1999, American Beauty, was directed by Sam Mendes and written by Alan Ball.

This uniquely twisted story depicts a dysfuntional suburban family coming to grips with the torture of teenage years and the ambivalence of middle-aged America.  Lester Burnham, played by Kevin Spacey, is a 40-year-old father who seeks a shovel to dig himself out of his self-induced depression which was borne from his dead-end job and cheating wife.  As the story progresses many characters are introduced into this dizzying chronicle of life in debauched suburbia.  Read more.
