Tuesday, September 22nd is Car Free Day – an annual, international event begun in 2000 as a grassroots movement by the World Carfree Network to reduce or eliminate the use of cars; and to liberate road and parking space for public use.
Washington, DC will host a celebration tomorrow from 11am-3pm at 7th and F streets. There will be free workshops presenting affordable green living, healthy choices and alternative fuel options, among others. The celebration will also feature live performances and free giveaways – thanks to prize donations from local businesses, such as the Equinox Restaurant, Trapeze School New York (TSNY), Madame Tussauds, California Tortilla, WMATA, Poste Brasserie, Zola, Founding Farmers, and District ChopHouse & Brewery.
This will be the second year that the District participates in Car Free Day. Residents are encouraged to leave their personal cars at home and use alternative methods of transportation. Enroll in the Car Free Challenge pledge to be car free tomorrow here at CarFreeMetroDC. Residents that are normally car free are still welcome to take the pledge. Those taking the pledge are also entered into a drawing for free prizes.
CarFreeMetroDC also provides information on how to be personally car free – with links to bicycle, teleworking, bus, metro and other alternative transportation resources. Car pooling and car share are also viable methods of transportation tomorrow, as the intent of the event is to decrease the number of cars on the road in order to help improve air quality, reduce the individual carbon footprint, and save gas and money.
Car Free Day is funded by the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia and U.S. Departments of Transportation. For more information, visit CarFreeMetroDC.
