The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced Shawn W. Garvin as the new Region 3 administrator.
Region 3, or the mid-Atlantic region, encompasses the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware. Mr. Garvin will be responsible for managing regional activities as well as serving as a liaison to state and local government officials – while maintaining the integrity of the EPA’s three fundamental values of science-based policies/program; adherence to the rule of law; and transparency.
This appointment comes just as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded more than $38.9 million to improve aging water infrastructure in the District a few weeks ago. These funds – provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 – will create jobs, boost the economy and protect public health and the environment by facilitating financing of District Department of the Environment and DC Water and Sewer Authority water, distribution and sustainable infrastructure projects. Additionally, many of the clean water projects will aid in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay and watershed.
Mr. Garvin has been involved in such District task forces as the DC Committee on Public Works and the Environment’s Stormwater Management Task Force. Having been with the EPA for more than ten (10) years, Mr. Garvin has served as special assistant to the Regional Administrator; and as Region 3’s Senior State and Congressional Liaison.
