Recycle your Halloween Candy with Treats 4 Our Troops
Starting today, Treats 4 Our Troops is accepting donations of unwanted Halloween candy.
Local area Treats 4 Our Troops – not to be confused with defunct Treats for Troops – is a grassroots, annual collection of surplus Halloween candy for those in the armed forces. Treats 4 Our Troops delivers this donated candy to injured service men and woman and their families currently residing at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. Last year, local area giving amounted to Treats 4 Our Troops collecting 300 pounds of candy.
Yael Roggen began the Treats 4 Our Troops program three years ago when one of her friends was a soldier serving in Iraq. Roggen was able to support him by keeping in touch and sending care packages to his unit. She wanted to do more and started by helping soldiers and veterans closer to home by visiting with them and their families at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. In 2007, she began collecting candy for soldiers, both here and overseas.

There is no connection to Treats for Troops except that Roggen thought it was a great idea – "I looked at all the extra candy after Halloween and thought it would be a great way to thank our deployed troops and their families who sacrifice so much”. Eventually Roggen plans on formalizing Treats 4 Our Troops as a non profit, though currently is attempting to link up with another organization so that donations can be tax deductible.
