Now Hiring: District Department of the Environment Director
The District Department of the Environment (DDOE) is currently searching for, and looking to permanently hire, its new director.
The call for a change in management comes as former DDOE director George Hawkins has moved to the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority to serve as its new General Manager. In the meantime, Mayor Fenty announced Maureen R. McGowan, Esq. – who has been an integral part of DDOE’s management team since November 2008 – as the interim director.
Working with the Office of the City Administrator, recent efforts of the DDOE in a search for its next permanent director include disseminating the job posting to numerous local and national environmental communities.
The new director is expected to continue the proactive and innovative direction of the DDOE – the nation’s largest urban environmental agency that staffs 300 and maintains a $100 million budget. In order to be considered for this strong management position, visit the

The legacy of the DDOE can be seen in such initiatives and programs as
Green DC and the
Free Home Energy Audits. In brief, DDOE is responsible for providing energy assistance to District residents; reviewing development applications for compliance with environmental requirements; monitoring and enforcing air and water quality standards; regulating the use and disposal of toxic substances; preserving the District's natural habitat for fish and wildlife; and developing and implementing stormwater management regulations to minimize runoff pollution into District waterways.
