In the late 1950s, there was a television series called “Father Knows Best.” Father Knows Best was a situation comedy depicting a wholesome family growing up in the Midwest. The dad, portrayed by actor Robert Young, worked as an insurance agent. Both parents had clearly defined roles and were responsible, respectful adults who parented three children. Whenever there was a crisis in the family—brought on by life or one of the youth—Young would step in and calm the waters with thoughtful advice, patience and a loving smile.

The television series has gone the way of other long and short-lived situation comedies, but the show’s name remains relevant, timeless and true. My Father—my heavenly Father—does know best. I know this from experience. He always steps in and calms the waters of my world, and He has left me with a wealth of thoughtful and timeless wisdom in a book called the Bible.  He is patient, wise and clearly loves his errant daughter.

There’ve been times in my life when I’ve gotten impatient, so I tried second-guessing my Father, even though Isaiah 40:31 says, “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

There have been times when I wanted to go one way, or do something that I shouldn't, so I’ve tried usurping my Father's authority. 1 Peter 2:13 tells us to “Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority.”

There have been times when I thought my Father was taking too long to respond, so I’ve tried making decisions without Him, when Psalm 27:14 tells me to “Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”

Somehow, even when I think “I’ve got this,” my Father always has the last word, and always—sometimes lovingly and  other times by chastising me-- shows me that He knows best. Proverbs 16:9 says, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”

Funny thing is I love that my Father knows best. I take solace in the fact that all that He does, He does for my good and His glory. I love knowing that He loves me enough to forgive me, to clean up the messes I make and to take care of me, in spite of me. I’m thankful that my Father knows best.
