While various industries suffered catastrophic losses in terms of revenue and layoffs, many tech employees found themselves with a raise in 2008. According a report in the Wall St. Journal, Boston was among of the cities with the highest paying tech employees at an average yearly salary of $81,627.
Joining this list were those in the Silicon Valley, Washington D.C., Los Angeles and New York. Although this survey did not include the recents cuts and layoffs by technology companies, it shows that although the economy was unsteady throughout 2008, the tech industry still remained strong in comparison with numerous others.
Overall, IT managers had the highest salaries in 2008 while Database administrators and network engineers followed. However, system developers received a pay cut.
To much dismay, the light was only bright for a short period of time as with the new year came the layoffs of employees from various companies with a technology presence in the Bay State. The Framingham-based technology company Bose, known worldwide for their audio products, confirmed reports that they are laying off 10% of their workforce (1,000 employees).
Despite this grim news, one can rest assured that if any industry is going to bounce back, it will be this one. Our world now thrives on all things technology as it is the future. It's not going anywhere so buckle up techies, you're industry is the industry to be in!
