While I like to eat local, California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) is a chain I don't feel AS bad patronizing.
Why? The booths are cozy and their menu is comfortable and reliable. There's the long list of good pizza, great salads, and most importantly, 3 focaccia sandwiches which come with a choice of salad or soup.
My go-to comfort meal: The Grilled Vegetable with herb-onion focaccia with tortilla soup. The onion bread isn't overpowering, but slightly sweet with the right amount of chew. Honestly, the bread makes it, but it's complemented by the grilled vegetables: Portobello mushroom, peppers, greens and tomatoes. The tangy soup is slightly spicy with a tortilla chip crunch.
Sounds cozy.
