So let's say it's Monday night, and you're looking for a place to stir the bucket with your beau, maybe do a little hot hash, try not to crash and burn, and all the while, watching out for banner stealers? * And you only have five bucks?
Obviously, you're itching to go to Tractor, the Ballard tavern that features Monday night square dancing accompanied by the music of Seattle's own old time string band, The Tallboys.
Known for its calendar of avant-garde honky-tonk, bluegrass, and alt-country live shows, (just what is gothic country folk, anyways?), Tractor is a 21-and over, hillbilly chic venue, with no food to speak of, but good drinks, and great music. On two Mondays out of the month throughout the summer, Tractor hosts a "Dare to be Square" square dancing night. Afraid you don't know how to square dance well, or even at all? No problem...the first half of the night is dominated by "simple dances", with a caller to talk you through the steps.
The Monday night square dancing starts at 7 PM, July 13, and runs semi-monthly through September 23rd. Admission is only $5.00, so it's definitely a frugal way to spend a monday evening.
* "Stir the bucket"-- when each couple in a square moves to the next counter-clockwise position.
* "hot hash"-- a challenging square dancing session danced to increasing tempo
* "crash and burn"-- a term used when your square needs to return to its home position
* "banner stealers"-- square dancers from one club attending another club's dance and receiving their banner
