In the March 2009 issue of National Geographic Traveler, contributing editor and travel writer Daisann McLane writes about the joys of "hoofing it" on vacation. "Until I learn a place with my feet," she writes, " I never really feel like I know it."
Luckily for us, we have excellent opportunities to learn the Emerald City with our feet, since Seattle just came in 7th on the American Podiatric Medical Association's list of the 25 best cities for walking, edging out even Honolulu, and our green competitor to the south, Portland.
The 100 largest metro areas in the country were judged on the following criteria:
Number of walking trails in the area
Number of national and local parks in the area
Number of people who walk for fitness and pleasure on a regular basis
Availability of museums, botanical gardens, and arboretums
Crime rate in the area, and number of pedestrian fatalities
Air quality. (thus the reason Los Angeles didn't crack the top ten...)
Walking is the most frugal way to enjoy a city, since it requires practically nothing to get started. (Well, except for shoes...)
More information about the list can be found in the May, 2009 issue of Prevention magazine.
