With all of the issues surrounding the Cesar Chavez Network over the past few months, the schools received good news recently as all of their Pueblo based schools made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) this year.
Dolores Huerta Preparatory High School was the only high school in Pueblo City District 60 to make AYP.
While this won't quiet critics, it does lend support to the system's curriculum and instruction. This is good news for the principals and teachers who continues to support the students even with the chaos that has ensued and the cloud that hangs over their schools. AYP is a difficult measure as only 60% of schools statewide have met this measures the past two years.
In earlier articles, I expressed the concern that the executive leadership concerns might override the emphasis on educating children. As most of Pueblo schools seek to find out how to get to AYP, Cesar Chavex schools have found out how. This is an excellent opportunity for a charter school system to replicate its methods into the traditional public school system as was intended by many early charter school advocates.
The teachers and administrative staff at Cesar Chavez deserve a hearty "well done."
