In America, the exposure to foreign languages is increasing. With 47 million American residents speaking another language, other than English, it has become more important to learn another language. This is especially true for those who wish to visit other countries that do not speak English as their primary language.

The importance of learning a foreign language is recognized in many countries.  Unfortunately, the U.S. is starting to slip in terms of foreign language education. Recently, schools have been forced to make budget cuts and many of them have chosen to either cut or restructure their foreign language courses. With America’s interconnection with the rest of the world, these types of budget cuts could impact how Americans in general interact with other cultures.

Why is it important to learn a foreign language? While English is a popular language, it is not spoken fluently everywhere in the world. The best time to learn a foreign language is from preschool through primary school. However, travels can still benefit from learning a foreign language while in high school or even as an adult. After all, it is better to at least know how to say or understand a few friendly phrases rather than traveling around France or China asking random people if they speak English.

For young travelers who do plan on visiting another country, it is highly recommended that they take a few foreign language courses. Travelers may want to practice with a native speaker of the language and possibly exchange language lessons by offering to help the speaker learn English. If there is not enough time, another alternative is to purchase a digital translator or language dictionary. While these techniques may not replace learning a foreign language, they can offer some help with translations.
