Many travel experts are against the idea of traveling alone. Some agencies and cruises give discounts for couples and travel groups while other sites promote group travels due to safety issues. However, young travelers who remain smart about traveling alone may have the most exciting and emancipating experiences in their travel adventures.

There are many reasons why adults young and old choose to travel by themselves. A traveler may want to visit a place but no one else can travel with them because of schedule or financial complications. Perhaps no one wants to travel to the same location. Some travelers may want to travel by themselves and meet new people rather than spend the entire trip with a travel companion or group. One of the greatest things about traveling alone is the freedom travelers receive knowing they can visit locations they want to see, do things they want to do, and they do not have to worry about conflicting interests of other travelers.

Young travelers who decide to travel by themselves to the destination do not need to remain alone during the entire travel experience. If a traveler wants to have a companion while traveling, there are a couple of options available. First, for travelers who have friends abroad, they could create a travel itinerary in which they can meet at a specific location. Travelers can join travel websites such as WAYN and interact with travelers around the world. However, travelers who decide to meet other online travelers in person should follow normal online safety rules including meeting one another at a public location.

Another alternative is to stay in a hostel or visit a hostel and socialize with the residents. Many Americans have never visited a hostel, so travelers who prefer to meet someone outside of America may find the experience of staying in a hostel to be refreshing. Often times, travelers can find other travelers in hostels that want to visit the same places. If a traveler finds another traveler and they want to see the same sites, then they can travel together throughout the city. Many travelers who stay in hostels are very friendly, but if travelers start to worry about traveling with another hostel resident, then they should stick with their gut instincts.

Some hostels, hotels, and tourist information centers offer more information about group tours, but travelers on a budget should ask whether or not these tours cost money. Sometimes, the fees are worth the experiences and discounts that travelers receive while other times the same experience could have been reached with a map and a discount card. As travelers become more ambitious and experienced with their adventures, they will soon reach a point where all they need is a map and travel ideas.
