As the summer ends, many students will be saying “goodbye” to their old lives in their former neighborhoods and saying “hello” to life inside a dormitory in another city or state. This time of year is usually very exciting and very stressful for both students and parents. One of the last situations that a parent or student wants to face is the risk of forgetting an important item at home, automobile failure, or other incidents that can delay a student’s arrival or hinder his or her adjustment to college life. Here are a few tips to consider before leaving for college:
• Make a list- Students should make a list before they begin to pack and check off each item as it is gathered and packed. A second list may be needed for purchases to be made once arriving at college.
• Check and double check everything- For students who plan to take a bus, train, or plane to their final destination; they need to call or go online in advance to double check their itineraries. Students or parents who plan on driving to the campus should take their cars to a mechanic for any last minute tune-ups. Double-check any other arrangements such as hotel arrangements for parents who plan to stay overnight or students who are not allowed in their dormitories until the following day.
• Contact the college- Ask the residential coordinator of the college when the dormitories will be open and permission granted for students to move into their rooms. Check to see if there is specific parking set aside for students who plan on moving into the dormitories.
• Contact potential roommates- Students who are sharing a room should contact one another and get to know one another as much as possible. Make arrangements with one another in order to avoid moving in on the same day or near the same time in order to avoid overcrowding the room. Or, if a student prefers extra assistance with moving then perhaps they should make arrangements to move in around the same time.
• Know the distance- Research online for the approximate amount of time it would take to reach the destination. Students who are traveling by car should also bring a map, print off instructions online through sites such as Map Quest or Google Directions, and/or purchase a GPS in order to avoid becoming lost.
• Start the travel early- With flight delays, traffic, and the risk of automobile breakdowns; students should travel as early as possible in case a delay does occur.
