Max Lucado, author of In the Grip of Grace, The Great House of God, Cure for the Common Life and his newest Fearless, has written The Tallest of the Smalls – a children’s book parable to Fearless. The Tallest of Smalls talks about the fears that children struggle with; all children live with the angst of fitting in to their social circles at school, social events and even church. For the Stiltsvillians, they are reminded each day at six, who is in and who is out; who will be picked and who will not to received the “stilts” and tower over and look down their noses. This is especially significant to little Ollie, the smallest of the smalls – an outcast, too small and insignificant to be noticed - hopes each day that he will be chosen to tower above and join those who matter and are important. What seems like a miracle, the day he is chosen to receive his stilts and rise above, turns out to be very rough and lonely at the top. When he falls who but Jesus is there to remind him that he is just as important and special without his stilts.
For our children, in days like these, they need a clear and true message that the redeeming love and power of God’s Love is never far from them. The plans and dreams that God has for our little ones are far more important and significant that the limits the world has for them. Author Max Lucado and illustrator Maria Monescillo have put together this perfect picture book to convey this message to today’s children. We as adults and guides need to be reminded of how important conveying this loving message of acceptance and grace to our little ones is. The Tallest of the Smalls is a recommended read for parents and teachers.
