San Jose, California is much more than the high tech, brand new condominiums, and big dog business which it has in recent years been associated with. Rather is packed full of interesting places and comes with a rich history.

These days however, much of what belongs to San Jose’s past is not exactly pretty. In fact, outside of the clean and quaint downtown area, some areas are sadly unappreciated and under the constant sands of time, at risk of disappearing. In fact, in some newer parts of the city have almost literally grown over the some of the old parts, so that it is not uncommon to find a tiny cottage from the early 20th century cowering in between two concrete office buildings from the 1980s, just sitting there like an old tooth in a mouth that keeps growing bigger teeth as it ages.

Despite its overpowering newness, San Jose still possesses some real gems hidden amongst the silicon and concrete. One of which is Dick's Bakery. I was reminded of Dick's existence when the office manager of a temporary gig I had came in with about three quarters of a leftover Burnt Almond Cake, which is famous if not legendary among locals.

It is Dick's hands down specialty and upon tasting it, I understood exactly why.

It has a texture that seems to defy explanation, as it is at once rich and creamy while at the same time being, as someone creatively described, floofy.  Whatever the right adjective be for the texture of this treat, it is indeed most kind to the palate. Of course, the best part of the Burnt Almond Cake is the burnt almond parts, which are also somewhat indiscernible whilst being wildly yummy; Sugary and crispy, burnt-goodness with hints of saltiness. For me it is reminiscent of a certain kind of Bavarian cream cake that one just doesn’t  see around here too often, and makes a Safeway bakery birthday cake look like a pack of Twinkies.

Aside from the infamous BAC, Dick’s provides a veritable cornucopia of cookies, pastries, brownies, and other amazing cakes & sweets that as most people report, are magical and in some cases, life changing. OK, well perhaps they do not possess self-help skills, but a pastry from Dick’s is never going to judge you and will make you feel all warm inside. Not only because the texture, smell and taste is over the top good, it is because you are purchasing baked goods from a family bakery that has been in operation since 1947. How can that not be good for you?

Dick’s Bakery is located in a strip mall that saw its heyday when the convertible Rambler premiered as the hottest ride around and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? was the newest box office hit, which adds to charm but does limit parking during rush times.  If you are looking for a Burnt Almond Cake or another cake order, you can call as short as 24 hours ahead and they’ll  be able to provide you with the goods for your special affair.  Dick's is located at 1593 Meridian Avenue in San Jose and open Sunday & Monday from 7:30am to 4:00pm, Tuesday through Thursday from 6:00am to 6:30pm, and Friday & Saturday from 5:30am to 7:00pm.

If you are reading this from your office in the San Jose area, you need to go visit Dick's for a Black & White cookie on your break, and maybe bring a few co-workers on your treat-run.
