One of the great trail hikes near Portland is the Eagle Creek trail leading to Punchbowl Falls.

Forest Trail

One of the more popular hikes in the Columbia River Gorge area is the Punchbowl Falls trail along Eagle Creek.  Waterfalls abound in the area, but Punchbowl Falls leads the way in fame along this forest trail.  The hike to the falls is approximately two miles, with an elevation gain of almost 500 feet, 300 of which you lose as you descend the lower Punchbowl Falls trail.

 Eagle Creek Hike

From the parking lot area along Interstate 84, you enter into a world of moss-covered basalt rock, ferns, and a lush forest of cedar, hemlock and douglas fir as the trail  ascends above the creek. Along the way the trail takes you cliffside in several areas.  If young children are in tow, it’s strongly suggested to keep close tabs on them.  Additionally, wet conditions can make parts of the trail slippery, so exercise caution.

At the 1.5 mile mark a trail forks to the right, leading you to a viewpoint of Metlako Falls, nestled back in the woods.  Returning to the main trail, after approximately a half mile, you’ll find the lower Punchbowl Falls trail.  This trail lead you down to the creek’s rocky shoreline and a great angle for that classic Punchbowl Falls photograph.

You can stay on the main trail for a bird’s eye view of the falls, but it’s recommended to hike down to the creek instead.  Your perspective is better along the shoreline, ultimately affording better photographic opportunities.

 Hiking Tiips

Because of its close proximity to Portland, the Eagle Creek trail to Punchbowl Falls can get a bit busy during the summer months.  To avoid this distraction, plan your visit early on a weekday or after the summer season has expired.  You will be rewarded for this effort with an ethereal silence that accentuates the stunning surroundings.

The trail is open year round, but as previously noted, better photographic opportunities are afforded you during non-peak visiting times.  Consider packing a quality pair of river shoes that you can slip on once you reach the water’s edge.  This will provide you the opportunity to set up your camera and tripod in the water, offering yet another perspective of the falls.
