Today marks the 12 year anniversary of the passing of Brooklyn's proclaimed King, Christoper "Notorious B.I.G." Wallace. On this very day, Biggie was shot and killed after the car he was riding in was sprayed with bullets after leaving a Vibe Magazine party in Los Angeles, California.
Known for his superior lyrical skills and a communicative quality, Biggie put out countless hits that those from Brooklyn and Hip Hop admirers could all connect with. The first time I found out about Biggie, was when he hoped on the remix for Mary J. Blige's song "Real Love"; I was totally blown away. Then he put out this song that made me pull out my blank cassette and record it straight off of New York's own Hot 97.1. It was called "Juicy".
The song spoke crazy volumes, highlighting the things a girl like me knew all too well growing up in Bed-Stuy. And although a lot of people looking in on the song, enjoyed the sampled beat and rhythmic bass, the lyrics is the part that is my favorite and that I anticipate the most.
Biggie was more than a reformed thug. Granted, he did some real low down dirty things in his day as merely highlighted in his biopic that hit theaters in January 2009; he was a truth teller and a wordsmith and learned the error in his ways later on in life. He is an inspiration to many and the reason why a lot of new Hip Hop artists even dare to pick up a microphone. He showed a lot of young people growing up without a silver spoon in their mouths, that there was a way out of that life and that things can and will get better if they worked hard to achieve whatever they set their hearts to.
There are still many artists out there vying to replace biggie's spot as the best, unfortunately many fail because there is only one spot for the King of Brooklyn and it has and will forever be filled.
Notorious B.I.G. you are truly missed.
