Grammy season is in full affect and the stars are gearing up for music’s biggest night. As we speak, artists and celebrities alike are stressing out over what they are going to say if they actually win a Grammy, their "good sport" loser faces, and most importantly what they are going to wear; decisions, decisions. I think it is only right to help take them out of their misery, as far as what categories they will win in, by giving them predictions.
What would the Grammy’s be like without Grammy predictions? I motion to say no fun at all (well for me). Hip Hop reigns supreme this year with Lil Wayne racking up 8 Grammy nominations. Kanye West and Jay-Z are some of the artists who are not far behind earning themselves 6 nods. So in the spirit of the Grammy’s, let’s get ready to predict baby!
Here are the 2009 Grammy nominees for the Rap categories beginning with;
Best Rap Album
Jay-Z- American Gangster
*Lil Wayne- The Carter III
Lupe Fiasco- The Cool
Nas -Untitled
T.I. - Paper Trail
This is what I call a category by the way. This could go either way. Personally, I would love for the Grammy to go to Lupe Fiasco. I believe his album was the best out of everyone in this category and it brought pizzazz and originality. Honestly, I believe this award will more than likely go to Lil Wayne. He had a huge year with The Carter III being one of the most sold albums of 2008.
Best Rap Song
Lil Wayne- Lollipop
Flo Rida (Feat. T-Pain) -Low
Snoop Dogg- Sexual Eruption
*T.I., Jay-Z, (Feat. Kanye & Lil Wayne)- Swagga Like Us
Update: Lupe Fiasco (Feat Mathew Santos) - Superstar
“Swagga Like Us” was the song that in my opinion saved 2008. It had all of the hottest artists, their deliveries were effortless and it embodied a hit; it made my top 8 collaborations list of 2008 and caped off at number 1. I think that they have this award in the bag.
Best Rap Performance
Big Boi (Feat. Raekwon & Andre 3000) -Royal Flush
Jay-Z & T.I. (Feat. Kanye West & Lil Wayne) -Swagga Like Us
*Lil Wayne (Feat. Jay-Z) -Mr. Carter
Ludacris (Feat. T.I.) -Wish You Would
Young Jeezy (Feat. Kanye West)-Put On
This song was the radio’s favorite. I tell you no lie; I must have heard this song EVERY morning at 7 AM on the dot like clock work. Granted it might be for other reasons why we heard it repeatedly it’s no secret that this song was every samplers dream and the collaboration was a match made in Hip Hop heaven (at the time).
Best Rap Collaboration
*Estelle (Feat Kanye West) - American Boy
Flo Rida (Feat T-Pain)- Low
John Legend & Andre 3000- Green Light
Lil Wayne (Feat T-Pain) - Got Money
Lupe Fiasco (Feat Mathew Santos) - Superstar
I was torn in this category. Quite frankly, I believe the real competition is between John Legend/ Andre 3000 & Estelle feat. Kanye West. However, all of the songs in this category were bangers. In an ideal world, my prediction will be on the money but somehow I feel Lil Wayne and T-Pain might just be taking this one home. Let us not sleep on Lupe though, there is a strong chance that “Superstar” might be the formula the academy was looking for.
Best Rap Solo Performance
Jay-Z -Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)…
*Lil Wayne-A Milli
Lupe Fiasco -Paris, Tokyo
Nas -Ni**** (The Slave And The Master)
Snoop Dogg -Sexual Eruption
No explanation needed here. The country was intoxicated with this repetitive track that succeeded at making Lil Wayne a household name. I am interested though in how they will get through Nas’ title track; this may be where the entertainment resides folks! Just a little humor you guys :-).
And there you have it, my predictions for the Rap category nominees. The Grammy’s will air February 8th 2009 from the Los Angeles Staple Center on CBS at 8 PM; check back to see if I was right on target with my predictions!
