Lupe Fiasco is rumored to retire after releasing a triple-disc set album entitled “LupEnd”. He made the announcement during a Chicago Halloween show. No release date has been confirmed as of yet and there has not been a response from his label Atlantic Records on the alleged retirement.
He reportedly told Billboard last December that “LupEnd” would be his last album’s title. He said “When you play a video game, you only put in three letters for your name and when the games over those letters and “End” pop up. My next record might be my last one”. Lupe has released only 2 albums to date; Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor (2006) and last year’s The Cool (2007).
I really am hoping that this is nothing more than a rumor. Lupe is one of the best hip-hop artists we have out right now and I can’t name many because we are in a hip-hop drought. He’s only dropped 2 albums; he just can’t bow out so soon. I remember when I first heard of Lupe and heard his song “Kick Push” a tribute to “skater kids” I thought he was one of the best rappers I’ve ever heard. Even Jay-Z recognized how genius he was by referring to him as an amazing lyricist; and I thought he did such a phenomenal job on “Superstar” which featured Matthew Santos that appeared on his sophomore effort The Cool.
I hope that he is not pulling a “Jay-Z”, getting us all riled up over an intended retirement when he plans on coming out again. I think that he is still a new artist and that he shouldn’t be demoralized by this new hip-hop era filled with auto-tunes and meaningless lyrics. What he brings to the table is similar to what made hip-hop such an incredible musical genre. He writes lyrics over soul quenching beats that we all can identify with and has an amazing gift with words and we as music consumers deserve the best and that is what he offers. Don’t go Lupe, please don’t go. I am not too proud to beg :O). Check out his video “Paris, Tokyo” below.
