Say what you will about the term alt-country. For the most part, it is used by radio and record labels to describe bands that put a little twang in their rock and roll.

Son Volt was, for better or worse, probably one of the first bands to be slapped with that particular label. This is a band that definitely infuses a healthy dose of country into its songs. Son Volt is not afraid of a little pedal steel guitar. And Jay Farrar has a way of delivering that lonely country sound in his vocals.

Fans of the band are probably anxiously awaiting the band's new release American Central Dust. Featuring fiddle, pedal steel guitar, and lap steel guitar, the album provides a healthy dose of what Son Volt has always down best. The new album is available on CD and vinyl tomorrow. You can pre-order the album today.
