David Lindley is one of those artists that may not be well-known by the general public, but has made a definite mark in the music business. If you search David Lindley on CD Universe, you will get 128 results. He has recorded with Warren Zevon, Jackson Browne, Dolly Parton, and Linda Ronstadt, to name a few. Not too shabby, eh?
I know what you are thinking. "OK, so this guy has recorded with some greats in the music business, but what does his music sound like? That's what is great about the guy. One thing I can say for certain about David Lindley is that he is a true American original. The truth is, he doesn't really sound like anyone. A lot of artists will say they don't really sound like anyone else, but David Lindley can say it honestly.
Lindley is a multi-instrumentalist. For the most part, he can play anything with strings like a guitar. He plays an oud, a saz, a bouzouki, and many others. Thirty-three others, to be precise. He has photos of all 36 of his instruments on his website. But that is not the only thing that makes him unique. He plays all of his instruments like a lap steel instead of like a traditional guitar. He may not play all 36 in a show, but he usually uses a fair amount of instruments when he performs songs like "Cat Food Sandwiches" and "When a Guy Gets Boobs."
Then there is the matter of Lindley's style. Don't go looking for someone who's ready for the cover of SPIN Magazine. You can expect to see him wearing a lot of polyester, usually some wildly patterned shirt and pants you might expect to find on a golf course. He also has long salt-and-pepper hair and long sideburns. Like I said, a true American original. David Lindley performs at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano on Friday 9 January.
